When ‘samudra Manthan’ was happening the ‘Halahal’ poison came out. Gods and Asuras got frightened. Nobody wants to take it. Then other gods requested to Lord Shiva to do something.
Lord Shiva came and drink ‘Halahal’ poison. Mahadev stored this danger poison in his throat. So his throat became blue in color that’s why we called him ‘Nilkhanth’. Ultimately Lord Shiva saves the human being. This incident believed to happen on Mahashivaratri.
